Teide National Park

The Parque Nacional de las Cañadas del Teide is located on Tenerife, the largest and most important Island of the Canary Islands. It was declared a national park in 1954 At the centre of the Teide National Park stands the mythical and awesome Mount Teide with 3.718 metres the highest mountain in the whole of Spain. Teide is also the third highest volcano on a volcanic ocean island.
Mount Teide is an active but dormant volcano which last erupted in 1909 .The park has an area of 18900 ha and was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in June 2007
The park lies at around 2000 metres above sea level which brings snow fall in winter with closed roads and in summer with temperatures sometimes rising above 40C. The variation in altitude ( from sea level to the Peak of Mt Teide at 3718 metres ) makes for a whole range of climatic and vegetation layers or levels which in turn renders the park a paradise for native flora and fauna, such as the violet, the yellow-blossoming broom-like clumps of hierba pajonera, the kestrel, the shrike and local species of lizard the lagarto tizon.
The Teide can be accessed either by foot or by cable car that goes almost to the very summit. From the peak of the Teide , you can have breathtaking views of Gran canaria, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro if the weather is clear ebough. El Teide and the National Park is the Canary Islands most visited tourist attraction and every Traveller going to Tenerife should not miss it.
